CIERA Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics
About
CIERA supports a wide range of interdisciplinary projects focused on research, education, and public outreach in Astrophysics. Our faculty work on projects that couple astronomy and astrophysics analysis with many other disciplines: computer science, applied math, planetary sciences, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, data science, science education, and more. Many have hired/mentored undergraduate researchers in a wide assortment of professional roles over the years.
If you are interested in working with a CIERA faculty member, please explore CIERA’s research topics, to pinpoint where your interests lie. If you see a particular faculty member involved in a project or area that appeals to you, reach out to them directly with details about your academic and professional background (a resume is always good to include if you have one), and explain why you would be excited to work with them.
Extremely helpful advice regarding how to communicate with faculty can be found on the Office for Undergraduate Research website. Reading, and adhering to, these tips will dramatically increase your chances of being brought into an undergraduate research role (this is true of research opportunities across Northwestern; not just within CIERA).
Note that opportunities are not always available – please check with the individual faculty member to find out. Exact details of an opportunity at CIERA will depend heavily on individual faculty/student conversations and agreements.
