SESP Junior Year Practicum
About
The Junior Year Practicum is a quarter-long academic internship with an area organization and includes a concurrent seminar. The student’s site must be related to their major in order to offer the student the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field. Throughout the quarter the student will spend 4 days/week and 30 hours/week working at their site. Each night the student writes ethnographic field notes, recording observations made at their site and then analyzing them. The field notes will be used as the basis for a final paper on a topic relevant to their observations and major. During the practicum seminar, which takes place on Fridays, the students will share their experiences and refine their ethnographic research skills. The Junior Year Practicum is required for SESP Human Development and Psychological Services (HDPS), Learning and Organizational Change (LOC), Learning Sciences (LS) & Social Policy students. Students can choose to complete their practicum throughout their junior year or during the summer before or after it. Summer students may opt to complete the Summer Field Studies program in Washington DC or San Francisco to fulfill their requirement. The Summer Field Studies program is also open to NU undergraduates from outside of SESP who are rising juniors or seniors.
